Earth Boring: Whitepapers

Earth Boring is committed to the trenchless industry. We continually engage ourselves not only on the practical side of the Trenchless Industry, but also the Educational side. A regular presenter of peer reviewed technical papers at NASTT No-Dig Shows, Regional Road-Shows and Center for Advancement of Trenchless Technologies (CATT) seminars our published papers are well received. Our efforts are tireless in elevating the understanding of the industry. From small 'lunch & learn' sessions to large scale conferences, our presentations are sought after for their clarity, impact and educational merit.

Recent Publications

2011 - Environmental Considerations With Large Diameter Directional Drilling

Authors - John Currey, Gene Woodbridge

This paper looks at the major environmental considerations required for large diameter directional drilling. Analyzing the development of environmental regulations relating to the HDD industry in Ontario and the team centric approach to developing responsible HDD environmental practices.

2011 - CATTOGRA 2011 – Trenchless Overview - Presentation

Authors - John Currey, Gene Woodbridge

A regular in our series of presentations. A general overview of available trenchless techniques. Presented annually in support of CATT and the Ontario Good Roads Association

2010 - Multi Trenchless Discipline Project for on Grade Sanitary Installation With Unique Design Challenge

Authors – John Currey, Gene Woodbridge

This paper describes challenges and triumphs of new on-grade sanitary sewer installations in a highly congested and wealthy major urban area. Highlights include parallel deployment of multiple methods of trenchless installation on a single project. Both Auger Boring and HDD works encountered interesting and challenging situations requiring the stakeholders to put aside traditional roles and work as a dynamic issue resolution team.

2010 - TRCA/DFO Presentation – Trenchless Overview

Authors - John Currey, Gene Woodbridge

A well attended presentation of trenchless techniques to the Toronto & Region Conservation Conservation Authority and the Department of Fisheries & Oceans. Discussing key techniques and considerations in design and environmental monitoring of trenchless works as well as providing an overview of relevant trenchless technologies.

2010 CATT – Contracts for New Construction Projects

Authors - John Currey, Gene Woodbridge

There are more stakeholders than you think on any project. This presentation looks at how to ensure stakeholder expectations are best managed and looks at key considerations in project contracts and documentation.

2010 CATT Trenchless Overview – Presentation

Authors - John Currey, Gene Woodbridge

A regular in our series of presentations. A general overview of available trenchless techniques.

2010 –Analysis of Design – When You Should Consider Pipe Ram over Traditional Auger/Jack & Bore – Toronto Trenchless Roadshow

Authors - John Currey, Gene Woodbridge

Presented at the 2010 Toronto Trenchless Roadshow, this presentation highlights design consideration for planning pipe ram operations. Analysis includes overviews of the two techniques, risk mitigation concerns and a small case study.

2010 – Design Considerations for Successful On-Grade & Technically Complex HDD Installations – Toronto Trenchless Roadshow

Authors - John Currey, Gene Woodbridge

Presented at the 2010 Toronto Trenchless Roadshow, this presentation looks at critical aspects of design for horizontal directional drilling projects. Well designed projects are easier to construct, and that in turn means more cost effective.

2009 - On-Grade Large Diameter Pipe Ramming Installations

Authors – John Currey, Gene Woodbridge, Eric Nicholson (Hammerhead Equipment)

No one element stands alone in the success of trenchless initiatives. Every projects success begins in the design phase but is completed in the field. This sounds like common sense but all too frequently the unknowns of trenchless installations and the limited level of experience with the wide range of trenchless solutions, can limit the success of a project at the very beginning. Fail to plan, plan to fail. The combination of a good soils report, knowledgeable contractor, the right trenchless technology and overall stakeholder understanding are the keys to success for any trenchless project. This paper discusses the challenges with acceptance of the Pipe Ramming methodologies in large diameter on grade installations.

2009 - On-Grade Large Diameter Directional Drilling

Authors - John Currey, Gene Woodbridge, Glenn Duyvestyn (Hatch Mott MacDonald)

Discussion of challenges and success criteria of large diameter, long distance on-grade HDD gravity sewer installations with a case study and trued solutions for design, risk mitigation, communication and configuration management. A contractor's perspective.

2009 – CATT HDD – Underground Utility Workshop

Authors - John Currey, Gene Woodbridge

2012 - Hand Mining in the Forest & Other Split Face Conditions

Authors - John Currey, Gene Woodbridge

This presentation covers the interesting aspects of a 1200mm hand mine project constructed in 2011. The ground conditions were such to drastically and dramatically impede the reasonable expectations of an stakeholder. A forest was literally removed from the mine path. This visual presentation will underscore the absolute imperative need for quality geotechnical research, de-watering and stakeholder understanding of the hand mine process.

2012 - Large Scale HDD Operations and Design Considerations

Authors - John Currey, Gene Woodbridge

With increasing regularity large diameter HDD installations are making greater headway in the design rooms for today's projects. This presentation highlights critical considerations when looking at large diameter pipe, long distance installations, with a focus on real maxi rig applications.

2012 - Balancing Trenchless Design & the Critical Needs of the Environment

Authors - John Currey, Gene Woodbridge

Once easy design solutions have become complex when required to balance the needs of environmental concerns. This presentation demonstrates a 'win-win' approach with which design needs and environmental concerns can provide mutually satisfactory results.
