Cellular concrete for grouting and engineered fills have become a very popular solution to the growing infrastructure market since the first application 20 years ago in Ontario. All provinces have followed the success of the Ontario market with their own cellular concrete specified projects across Canada. The product has been used worldwide for over 35 years, with most of the applications being in the USA, China, United Kingdom and Europe.
Earth Boring creates cellular concrete on site with specialized equipment that takes normal Portland Cement, water, a pre-formed foam, and an air compressor to produce a lightweight engineered fill. The flowable fill and can be pumped into small annular spaces or into large load reducing backfill road, bridge, and wall applications. The on-board pump allows the production equipment to be up to 300m from the final point of placement. Most projects require the cellular concrete to have a wet density of 400 to 500 kg/m3 which creates a 0.5 to 1.0MPa fill with strict quality control protocols.
Some of the properties of cellular are long distance flow; self-leveling; lightweight; high bearing capacity to weight; R value of 1 to 2/inch which allows for freeze-thaw resistance for shallow bury utilities; and the cement/air bubble structure creates a closed cell fill with low permeability.
Earth Boring has been active in creating new and advancing technologies since 1947, and cellular concrete is just one of the new additions to our industry accepted capabilities. As a result, the creation of the Earth Boring Grouts and Fluids division will add this product and others to address the changing and challenging site conditions in the construction infrastructure market.
